Surf’s Up

Surfed for the first time … Well, I should say, first time I *tired* to surf!

On Saturday the 24th myself, Erin, Becca, Luke, Michael, Ashley, and Luke all headed out to Alexandra Headlands (about 15 min from Sunny Coast). Erin’s roommate, Luke, had extra surf boards and agreed to take us along for most of our first time surfing.

As we got to the beach there were red flags up, so we knew we were in for an interesting ride. Red flags mean high hazard and that strong surf & currents were present. Don’t worry… we knew to just take it easy, stay close to each other, and not go out too far. So we geared up, got a mini surf lesson from Luke, and of course took a couple classic surfer pictures:

Well, let’s just say that surfing wasn’t as easy as it looks! We all agreed that the red flag classification of the waves definitely had something to do with it, and we have plans to go back on a no flag or green flag day. I know you all have the question “Did you get up?” on your mind… unfortunately, no. But I do plan on going back until I do get up, maybe on not such a rough day!

But I must say it was fun trying! The first thing I learned about surfing is that it is quickly exhausting, but that just means taking a handful of breaks. The one thing I did start to get down was sitting towards the back of my board to get over the big waves and paddle out. Unfortunately, with the rough conditions there weren’t a lot of breaks in the waves. Thus, every time I tried to get up it had to be quick… which normally resulted with me being tossed by the waves. I can reassure you that I got well above my daily salt intake that day! As you can see in the first picture below, I was not impressed by all the salt water in my eyes… but at least I was (trying) to smile through it! By the second picture you can at least see that I still had a smile on my face every time I got wiped out!

We were out there for about 2 hours, but after our hunger for Kebabs took over we decided to call it a day. I ended the day with about a 5 inch bruise on my thigh from someone’s surf board, but still thriving. I look forward to trying surfing again on a much more calm day and hopefully getting up this time!

Coming Soon: Next Big Adventure

I have been a bit busy with school lately (I know, shocker that I actually do school here too haha) so that’s why I’ve been a little quiet. Plus it’s been a bit rainy, so not the best weather to get out and do stuff.

But fear not: after my last class on Wednesday, I begin my mid-semester break until April 9th (better known to us as Spring Break). This coming Friday my aunt, Sharon, will be flying out to come visit me! So just a little more school and then a great adventure with Sharon is coming soon. We will be in Sunshine Coast, the Great Barrier Reef, Noosa, Byron Bay, and Brisbane – so look for some great stories soon!

Hang ten! πŸ€™πŸ»
